Life without Social media

Updated: 6 hours ago

Social media has become an integral part of our lives. We have grown accustomed to always being connected—liking and commenting on our friends' latest posts, reacting to their stories, and scrolling through reels to pass the time while we’re on the subway or waiting in line. In doing so, we often overlook the world around us. Because of these touch screens, we have lost touch with our environment.

To change this, I decided to quit Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Snapchat for an entire year. Through this platform, I will share the changes I experienced within myself and my social life, as well as explain why I won’t be returning to any of these social platforms.

We need to disconnect from the world in order to connect with ourselves.
  1.   Self-esteem: The first thing that I realized after quitting social media was that I became more comfortable in my skin and was happier with my small success. Well if I look back it was quite obvious because now I was comparing myself with myself.

  2. Improved relations: The foundation of a relationship is communication. Once social media was out of my life my mind was clearer than ever, hence I was able to express myself better, listen better, and understand another person better.

  3. Enhanced focus: 30-second reels and 15-second ads impact one’s attention span making one less focused. After social media, my concentration was at an all-time high post-COVID. I was able to drive better, Manage multiple tasks better, and solve quantitative problems quicker.

  4. Calmness: After a few months without social media my mind became calmer, suddenly the traffic to the office didn’t seem so annoying, the toxic workspace seemed tolerable and delays in orders seemed OK. That FOMO, he/she is doing that, or he/she achieved something was gone.

  5. Positive Use of Time: The time I wasted on endless scrolling was now spent on hobbies I had abandoned due to lack of time. I was able to prepare my lunch in the morning, I had time to go for a walk in the evening. Time which was never enough seemed enough.

These were a few of the many changes I had experienced. Frankly, this was not easy for me as there were some challenges that I faced but those will be shared some another time. I believe these major five changes are enough to strengthen my claim mentioned in the beginning.

In the end, I will request the reader to try what I did for at least 2 months if not I request you to share my experience with your close one or someone to whom this might be useful there might be a chance that this will prove to be the change one needed to leap ahead for more fulfilling life.
